independent youth, Denver scholars, first generation, and transitioning transfer students.
WHO YOU ARE:
As a new student at UNC you may have questions about how to be successful. Soar provides custom 1:1 success coaching to help students proactively achieve their academic and personal goals in a supportive and inclusive environment.
WHY CHOOSE SOAR:

Bears First
Bears First is designed to help students entering UNC below a 3.0 high school GPA establish a strong first and second year of academic success through personalized coaching and advising, facilitating the development of individual academic success plans and formalized connections to campus resources and support.
Bears First participants are identified through the Office of Admissions and many students classify as first generation. Participation in the program establishes a foundation for success at UNC through a structured approach to personalized proactive coaching and advising in an inclusive and caring environment.
Exploring Students
UNC identifies undeclared students as exploring. If you do not have a major in mind or you are considering multiple major options you are an exploring student.
Soar and UNC are committed to helping you if you have come to college to explore the major options that are available. We can also guide you if you are considering a major change but are unsure of what you want to switch to.
Independent Youth
The Independent Youth Program is designed to help you establish academic success by providing personalized coaching and advising, facilitating the development of individual academic success plans, and formalized connections to campus resources and supports.
Independent Youth are identified through the Office of Financial Aid. Participation in the Independent Youth program establishes a foundation of success at UNC through a structured approach to personalized proactive coaching and advising in an inclusive and caring environment.
Denver Scholarship Foundation
Soar helps Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) Scholars establish academic success through personalized coaching and advising, facilitating the development of individual academic success plans and formalized connections to campus resources and support. DSF Scholars can renew this scholarship for up to four years if their scholarship success requirements are met each academic semester.
DSF scholars are selected through an application process from the Denver Scholarship Foundation. DSF Participation in Soar establishes a foundation for success at UNC through a structured approach to personalized proactive coaching and advising in an inclusive and caring environment.
First Generation
Soar’s First Generation Program is designed to help you establish academic success by providing personalized coaching and advising, facilitating the development of individual academic success plans, and formalized connections to campus resources and supports.
You are considered First Generation if your parents have not completed a 4-year college degree. Participation in Soar’s First Generation Program establishes a foundation of success at UNC through a structured approach to personalized proactive coaching and advising in an inclusive and caring environment.
Privacy
Due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), University staff can provide academic information about a student only to the student themselves. This includes items such as cumulative grade point average, grades, and academic standing. However, a great deal of general information can be shared with the support system of a student.
